about j.m.
Hello and welcome! I’m J.M. Wood, a professional male/masc audiobook narrator and voice actor working primarily in mystery/thrillers, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, and Christian nonfiction (he said without a trace of irony). I have facility with accents and comedy, and my pug thinks I’m pretty swell.
Why do I do this? Because it brings me joy to tell good stories & make people smile or at least think. The most pithy description of me that I ever heard was that I’m a happy mashup of Bob Ross and Don Draper.
My facility with comedy and foreign languages such as German, French, and Arabic meshes well with my facility with accents. I am able to perform Boston, Maine, Southern US, W. Texas, British RP, Cockney, Scottish, Irish, Middle-eastern, and S. African.
My academic qualifications in Biblical Studies/Theology make me uniquely suited to Christian/religious nonfiction.
I have relevant experience as a commercial pilot and aviation safety expert, manager, tall ship sailor, US Navy veteran, (serving 6 years as an Arabic linguist), blacksmith, Jim Bridger type mountain man buff, military and US history enthusiast.
Fun Facts: I have served as a volunteer tall ship deckhand, worked (real) cattle drives, and flew single-pilot cargo operations in all weather without one single box (or the FAA) complaining.
I am committed to great communication, conscientious and creative work, and continual improvement. To that end, I am a member of professional organizations such as PANA, APA, and WoVO.

verified human - why human narration still matters
It’s right in my tagline: Human Authenticity in the Artificial Age. This means that when it comes to the creative arts, I do not use, incorporate or consent to the use of A.I. in any voice product of mine. I am passionate about authenticity. I care about the craft of acting, which is a way for humans to communicate to each other vital truths of the human condition, and therein lies the inherent value in human-crafted art.
